Labour and Birth.

When you go into labour you will be attended by your named Midwife* from start to finish, wherever your birth experience leads.

In your own home we can practice to our full capacity as a midwife, in hospital our practice may be determined by local policy. We thus prefer to book clients for home birth and we provide all the equipment necessary for a safe home birth.

Research has demonstrated that for well women having a normal pregnancy home birth is not just as safe, but safer, than a hospital delivery.

We have a very positive attitude to water birth and will recommend pools and companies for private hire if this is an area you wish to explore.

If you chose to labour in hospital or are transferred for medical reasons or at your request we will stay with you and act as your support and professional advocate. In some hospitals we will be able to arrange honorary contracts and thus will be able to continue providing care. We will discuss all this at length at our Initial Consultation.

After your baby has been born we will stay with you to ensure that all is well and be led by you and your family as to when you wish us to leave so you can get to know your new baby in the privacy of your family unit.

* Occasionally in the case of sickness etc your named Midwife’s partner may attend you. You can be assured all Midwives practice to the same standard and have the same philosophy of care that runs throughout Sussex Independent Midwives. Provision will have been made through your ante natal period to ensure you have met your named Midwife’s partner and she will be fully aware of you and your wishes for labour and life with your new baby. This will only happen very occasionally however. The reason we practice as Independent Midwives is to see through the whole wonderful process of pregnancy and childbirth and be with you in an ongoing relationship though that whole journey wherever possible.
